What is the Difference Between a Salve and a Balm?Updated 9 months ago

This is a very common question and there is not a lot of information about these terms available on the internet, which is strange considering how long these skincare products have been in use!

So long in fact that researchers located recipes from 2400 BC!

Generally speaking, both Balms and Salves contain an oil, a wax of some kind and whatever herbal or medicinal powders, extracts, or liquid extracts the manufacturer wishes to use.

What you end up with is a thick, semi-solid product that can be used for many applications. Moisturizing and protecting the skin, protecting against environmental irritants and general skincare are just some of those applications.

The main difference between a Balm and Salve: consistency.

Salves tend to lean more toward the oily, thinner side, while Balms tend to possess a higher wax content, making them great at sealing in moisture. Salves excel when you don't have time to sit down and apply a thicker balm, especially if contained in an applicator bottle of some kind.

What is amazing about Salves and Balms is that they act as a base to carry other ingredients. For instance, one can take an herbal extract and combine it to either a Balm or Salve to reach a desired effect. They are also safe to apply as needed.

Furthermore, essential oils of beneficial plants may be included in some products to potentially aid in therapeutic ways!

As with any new product, you should always check with a dermatologist or doctor if you have special skin conditions or potential underlying health concerns that could cause skin issues.

That all having been said, the debate of Salve vs Balm is a very easily understood one!

Essentially, these terms have been used interchangeably because they are VERY similar;  however, when looking into a Salve, you can be sure that you'll have a much looser and less waxy product.

Whereas, when looking into a Balm, you will find the more classic style of topical skincare. An equally effective, waxier product that requires rubbing to apply.

Salve
Balm
  • Contains more oil; thinner
  • Contains more wax; thicker
  • Easy for on-the-go and requires less manual application
  • Best for nighttime and post-activity application; requires more rubbing to apply

  • Fantastic for delivery of additional ingredients; works more swiftly due to skin permeability
  • Great for delivery of additional ingredients AND helps skin maintain moisture

Either way, those looking to up their skincare regimen or find new ways to deliver herbal extracts would be in luck looking into a Salve or a Balm!
